EDUCATION LOTTERY RETAILERS RECEIVE RECOGNITION
Word of mouth, higher payouts on instant tickets, and talking up the lottery are paying off for some North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) retailers. Two Charlotte Region retailers have increased sales from 241% to 305% and have been named "Stellar Sellers." Another retailer has been named a "S.T.A.R." for devoting its limited space to promoting the lottery and for talking up the lottery to every potential customer who walks by.

Wheels Sports & Cue, 927 19th Street SW, Hickory
Wheels Sports & Cue increased its sales by 305.90%. Sheila Hildebrand of Wheels Sports & Cue says word of mouth helps sales. "Once one person buys a ticket, it becomes a competition and other people start buying them," Hildebrand said. Most of the tickets purchased at Wheels Sports & Cue are scratched off there. Players know how the tickets are playing and paying off. Hildebrand added that her employee Clara is a great salesperson and promotes the tickets.

Dan’s #1, 615 A Gastonia Highway, Bessemer City
Dan's #1 increased its sales by 241.08% compared to the previous quarter. Danny Boiling of Dan's #1 attributes the success to higher payouts on tickets. "When Cash Spectacular came out, they started flying off the shelves," Boiling said. "We sold the heck out of those things." He added that being a neighborhood store-in business for 40 years-makes a difference. Customers know who has won and enjoy playing at the store, he said.

Smoke & Lotto Express #1 & #2, 8111 Concord Mills Boulevard, Concord
Smoke & Lotto Express #1 and #2 are located at both ends of Concord Mills Mall and have limited space to display lottery products. In fact, each kiosk is only about 4'x4', yet they devote a lot of the limited space to instant ticket dispensers, and feature new tickets prominently. Nina Ghandi attributes the success to high foot traffic in the mall and her own personality. "I like people … talking to them and selling lots of tickets!" Ghandi says.
